2022 Estate Pinot Noir

Vineyard: The River Road Ranch vineyard is located within the Russian River Valley AVA. The soil composition is Cortina, characterized as deep, well-draining soil composed mainly of gravel/sandy loam. This fast-draining soil leads to stressed vines that focus their energy on the grapes rather than leafy growth, resulting in more intensity and concentration. Certified Sustainable in 2017 (CCSW)

Vintage: The 2022 growing year looked like it was going to be year 4 or 5 of drought conditions with below average winter rains but some late spring rains came to the rescue and aided in canopy growth, which would become essential later in the summer. Late spring and early summer growing conditions were ideal although crop yields looked to be slightly lower than average. An early September heat spike with consecutive record-breaking temperature days resulted in a race to the finish.

 

Winemaking: Traditional techniques using open top fermenters and manual punch downs were implemented. To accentuate the fruit component, we ferment with twenty percent whole cluster. The components are a selection of clones 777, 667, 114, 115 and UCD37. Each clone brings to the blend its own distinct characteristics. The 777 clone adds pronounced Pinot Noir aroma, good color and a very silky texture, 667 is bright and aromatic, 114 is super fruity, 115 lends good color and acid, and UCD37 is bold and full bodied.
